Photography Facilities

Photographers are required to work with sophisticated equipment and to be familiar with the various photographic processes.

Students are required to have their own DSLR cameras and lenses, but the department is well equipped with professional roll-film Hasselblad and 4x5” Sinar cameras, as well as a wide range of flash and tungsten lighting equipment for both studio and location use.

Our main studio is 18 meters long by 9 meters wide, with full infinity curve walls for photographic shoots and video productions. It is frequently used by local and visiting professional photographers for photography of cars and workshops, which provides further opportunities for students to see what is required in the “real world” of professional photography.

Our computer labs are equipped with a number of the latest Apple Macintosh computers and are accessible to students 24/7. Programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Express video editing, Adobe After Effects, Dream Weaver, Aperture and Lightroom are available for students to edit their photographs, work with page layout, edit video productions and create their own websites. We pride ourselves in laying a solid foundation of knowledge in a variety of software programs, and in equipping our students for the “real world”.

Even though our course is 90% digital for capture and printing we still maintain a darkroom. For those students who wish to experiment with the fine art of Black and White hand printing, we are well equipped with a variety of enlargers ranging from 35mm to 4x5” sheet films. We stock all the necessary chemicals for processing Black and White film and developing prints, as well as the film itself and the paper for printing.

“My time at NMMU was really the best year of my photographic life. I felt like a toddler that’s been let loose in Toys R Us: Lots of equipment, balanced guidance and time to make photography my own. Thanks Graham, Jonty, Pine and Glenn!”
